Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy

Blood flow restriction therapy (BFRT) is a rehabilitation technique in which a pneumatic cuff or band is applied to the proximal portion of a limb to partially restrict arterial inflow and fully restrict venous outflow during exercise. This creates a hypoxic environment in the working muscles, allowing for significant gains in muscle strength and hypertrophy while using low-load resistance (typically 20–40% of one-repetition maximum), as opposed to the higher loads (≥70% 1RM) required in traditional resistance training.

In physical therapy, BFRT is used to facilitate muscle strengthening and prevent atrophy in populations unable to tolerate high mechanical loads, such as those recovering from musculoskeletal injury, orthopedic surgery (e.g., ACL reconstruction), or in older adults at risk for sarcopenia. The therapy is typically integrated into rehabilitation protocols by combining low-load resistance or aerobic exercise with the application of the cuff, which is inflated to a pressure individualized to the patient—often 40–90% of limb occlusion pressure, as determined by Doppler or other methods.

BFRT has demonstrated efficacy in improving muscle mass, strength, and functional outcomes, with a safety profile comparable to traditional resistance training when appropriately screened and monitored.

Functional Dry Needling (FDN)

Functional Dry Needling (FDN) is a specialized treatment technique used by licensed physical therapists to relieve pain and improve movement. FDN involves inserting a very thin, solid filament needle into tight muscles, often referred to as trigger points, to help “reset” the muscle and promote healing.

It is called “dry” needling because no medication or fluid is injected. The benefit comes from the mechanical effect of the needle on the tissue.

H-Wave Therapy

H-Wave is a multi-functional electrical stimulation device intended to speed recovery, restore function, and manage chronic, acute or post-operative pain. It is a non-invasive drug-free alternative treatment option without harmful side effects. This unique technology stands apart from other electrotherapy modalities such as TENS, which only masks pain while the device is on, and traditional muscle stimulators; which use harsh signals and fatiguing muscle contractions to re-educate muscle. Whereas H-Wave is a rehabilitative device that focuses on addressing the root cause of symptoms and providing lasting, cumulative benefits; which patients can feel long after the device is taken off.

H-Wave can be used in a clinical setting, but is most effective when used on a regular basis. Patients can easily use the Home H-Wave device on their own several times per day or several times per week. Treatments typically last 30-60 minutes on average and can be done while relaxing in the comfort, convenience and privacy of their own home or preferred setting. Home H-Wave is used to help relieve pain and help speed the recovery process by increasing blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, improving range of motion, relaxing muscle spasms, and preventing disuse atrophy.
